In 1984, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to test the Lancia 037 that Markku Alen had driven to a second place in Rally New Zealand shortly before.
In those days it wasn’t common for Lancia – or other factory teams – to let the press have a run in their factory cars, so things were a bit hush-hush and I had to walk away from the car when a bunch of Japanese journalists came by to avoid questions about what was going on.
The experience ended up as an article in Bilen Motor og Sport the following year. We weren’t always so current in those days. The images on this page are scanned from the original proofs, known as cromalins, and therefore with editorial comments before printing.
